One of the main types of fuels is the Aviation gasoline or AV gas, which is mostly use on piston powered engines aircrafts. It is a kind of aircraft fuel that is very common and has a history of usage. The main purpose of the AV gas is to reciprocate piston engines. It has various additives such as tetraethyl, metal deactivator, antiknock, icing inhibitors, color dies, static dissipaters, corrosion inhibitors, and oxidation inhibitors.
At standard temperatures, AV gas, is highly volatile and very flammable. For this reason, it is important to handle the gas properly and safely. The two kinds of octane ratings that are used in AV gas grading are the rich mixture and lean ratings.
Gasoline fuels are mostly prepared from hydrocarbons the most common being iso-octane. Iso-octanes are hydrocarbons that have outstanding antiknock properties. The fuels that have antiknock properties that bear resemblance to those of iso-octane are mostly rated 100. Heptane is another hydrocarbon that can be combined with iso-octane in controlled amounts to allow an octane rating of the reference fuel.
Today, additions of lead and other replacements, increase the engine’s power prior to detonation. This means that the addition of lead will improve the performance of the engine. Another factor that helps to increase the power of an engine is the air ratio of the fuel.
As opposed to common beliefs, changing to a fuel that has higher octane ratings is not the only thing that can result to the production of more power by an engine. Fuel that has a high octane rating is important in high compression engines because it assists in impeding the probability of detonation or knocking at settings involving high power.
The next category of AV gas is the AV gas 100LL that has a low lead content of 0.5 gr/ltr. Additionally, there is the type of AV gas known as the AV gas 82UL which has no lead content and as such, it is most suitable for engines with low compression ratios.
In previous times, AV gas had a number of grades in use but today they have been reduced to only the AV 100.
While adding lead to aviation fuel might be good in enhancing the performance of an engine during combustion, unleaded fuels are recommended for reasons relating to health. Nonetheless, pollution that results from lead largely comes from combustion in car engines that run on leaded fuel.
